How We Built This Ranking: 100% Online Delivery First
Behavior analysis is taught online but practiced in person, so "online" can mean very different things from one program to the next.
Filter first, score second
The first cut was delivery format. Only programs that can be completed fully online stayed in the pool. Hybrid programs and anything requiring time on campus never entered, so they were not ranked low; they were not considered. Composite scoring happened only among the programs that remained.
What went into the scoring
Three kinds of information shaped the order: graduate tuition and fees from IPEDS, institutional quality fields from the College Scorecard, and program-level descriptive summaries of each certificate.
What we left out on purpose
Institution-wide net price and undergraduate earnings were not weighted. Both describe the school as a whole, mostly its bachelor's students, and say little about what a working adult pays or earns after a short graduate certificate. Using them would have added noise that looked like precision.

A certificate's title says little about which credential it actually prepares you for. The two credentials rest on different requirements.
Two credentials, two entry points
- BCaBA: The assistant-level credential. It is generally built around a bachelor's degree, approved behavior-analytic coursework, supervised fieldwork (at least 40% unrestricted), and the BCaBA exam.
- BCBA: Requires a master's degree or higher, qualifying graduate-level coursework passed with a C or higher within the past 10 years, supervised fieldwork of 20 to 130 hours per month, and the BCBA exam.
Why a standalone certificate is risky
A graduate certificate usually does not satisfy BCBA eligibility on its own, because the degree requirement is still master's level. Certificates typically sit inside or alongside a master's program. Confirm that arrangement before you pay tuition.
Verify the coursework
ABAI historically verified course sequences, but its directory is not publicly accessible as of 2026, so you cannot search a school by name there. Treat a listing as a starting point, not proof. For 2026 applications, the BACB asks for official transcripts plus a Coursework Attestation completed by the institution's registered Pathway 2 Program Contact. Ask any program whether it has one, and whether the certificate courses count toward either credential. A sequence that sits outside a qualifying program may count toward neither.
